Alto Lake Closed Indefinitely Due to South Fork Fire Damages

June 28, 2024

The Village of Ruidoso regrets to inform residents and visitors that Alto Lake is closed indefinitely due to extensive damages caused by the South Fork Fire. The wildfire, which recently swept through the area, has left significant impacts on the natural environment and infrastructure surrounding the lake, necessitating immediate and prolonged closure for safety and restoration efforts.

The NM National Guard has been hard at work in the Ruidoso area, helping improve Village conditions, including debris removal due to the wildfires and flooding.

IMPACT OF THE FIRE

The South Fork Fire has caused widespread destruction in the Alto Lake area. The fire's intensity has compromised trails, recreational facilities, and the lake's ecosystem. Fallen trees, unstable ground, and potential hazards pose significant risks to public safety, making it unsafe for any recreational activities.

SAFETY AND RESTORATION EFFORTS

The Village of Ruidoso, in collaboration with local and state authorities, is prioritizing the safety of its residents and visitors. Restoration teams are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and formulating a comprehensive recovery plan. This plan will include clearing debris, repairing trails, and rehabilitating the natural habitat to ensure that Alto Lake can eventually be enjoyed safely and sustainably.

STAY INFORMED

We understand the disappointment this closure may cause to those who cherish Alto Lake for its beauty and recreational opportunities. We assure you that every effort is being made to expedite the restoration process. Regular updates on the progress and any changes to the closure status will be provided through the South Fork Fire Information Hub and the Village of Ruidoso’s official channels.

For now, we urge everyone to respect the closure and avoid the area to allow restoration teams to work efficiently and safely. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated during this challenging time.
